1 1/21/15 Objectives Content Objective: Analyze a graph to identify trends or patterns in experimental data. Language Objective: Write the Analysis and Discussion sections of your lab report.

2 Entry Task: Lab Notebook 1/21/15
In your lab notebook, create and fill in the following T-chart: Possible source of experimental error Possible effect of experimental error on results 1. 2. 3. 1. 2. 3.

3 Experimental Error Partner Share:
Partner A: Share one T-chart entry out loud Partner B: Write down entry in lab notebook Switch Be prepared to share out with the class

4 Experimental Error - Period 1
Possible Source Inaccurate water measurement Relocating bag from window to wall 3. Opening cabinet allowed seeds in “24hr darkeness” to receive light Possible Effect Uncontrolled experiment, some seeds received more water than others Change in temperature during experiment could have affected seed germination Enhanced germination or activated photosynthesis

5 Experimental Error - Period 2
Possible Source Too much water Too little water Bag not sealed at all Bag completely sealed Temperature in the room Seed-to-water ratio Possible Effect Seeds might drown Seeds might not germinate Paper towel dried out Not enough oxygen for seeds to germinate Some seeds require temperatures warmer than the room

6 Experimental Error - Period 3
Possible Source Film on windows Dark environment not constant Amount of water Amount of air in the bag Bags completely sealed Bags too open Possible Effect Less sunlight on seeds and plants Could affect germination, plants might start doing photosynthesis Seed germination Not enough oxygen Paper towel dried out

7 Experimental Error - Period 4
Possible Source Water measured incorrectly Too many seeds Distance from heat lamp Bags sealed completely Bags completely unsealed Possible Effect Seeds were too dry to germinate Not enough nutrients Inconsistent seed temperature Not enough oxygen to germinate Paper towel will dry out

8 Experimental Error - Period 5
Possible Source Bag sealed Mixing up seed groups Too much water Incorrect measurement units Moving seeds from window to the wall Seeds covered with tape Window film Possible Effect Lack of oxygen which prevents germination Inconsistent results because of new growth conditions Seeds drown Incorrect graph scale Temperature change affected germination Sunlight variability

9 Analysis The Results section of your lab report will have three parts:
Data Table(s) Graph(s) Analysis of Graph(s) With your lab parnter(s), take turns sharing what you notice about your graphed experimental data. Record observations in your lab notebook.

10 Analysis When we analyze data, we seek to, “discover or reveal (something) through detailed examination.” With your lab parnter(s), take turns sharing what you notice about your graphed experimental data. Record all observations in your lab notebook. Focus on trends or patterns in the data. In paragraph form, these observations will become your Analysis section.

11 Discussion Section Explain how your results supported / disproved your Hypothesis. Discuss at least three possible sources of error and how those errors may have impacted your results. Explain relevant next experiment to extend learning about your Research Question.

12 Homework Finish writing the Analysis and Discussion sections of your lab report in paragraph form. Be prepared to finish typing your lab report tomorrow. We will meet in the computer lab in room 235.
