The Big6 Skills Model represents: A systematic approach to information problem-solving six broad skills or logical steps for successful information solving problem an alternative to traditional information skills that focuses on location and access skills

The Big6 Skills 1. Task definition 2. Information seeking strategies 3. Location and access 4. Use of information 5. Synthesis 6. Evaluation

1. Task Definition Define the information problem and identify the information need in order to solve the problem Answer the question: What’s my assignment? What information do I need to get to do the assignment?

2. Information Seeking Strategies Determine the range of possible sources Evaluate and select the best sources Develop a plan for searching List the various resources to use and select the best ones

3. Location and Access Locate and use the resources Example: Students will be able to locate and use appropriate CD-ROM, OPAC, print, and other resources within the library.

4. Use of Information Engage in reading, viewing, listening, etc. to determine the relevance of information Extract relevant information and use it properly

4. Use of Information Examples: Students will view and download relevant documents from Internet sites. Students will view and save relevant images from Internet sites.

5. Synthesis Organize information from various sources (e.g., use note cards, printouts) and communicate the results Example: Students will create a Web page using html coding.

6. Evaluation Judge the final product (effectiveness) determine whether the information need has been met
