Prosocial Behaviors and Violence Prevention

Prosocial Behaviors and Violence Prevention Target: I will be able to explain prosocial behaviors and how they may prevent violence Aggressive behaviors- the use of words or actions that are disrespectful towards others Increases the risk of being a perpetrator or victim of violence Will likely lead to future aggressive behaviors. Pg. 55

May provoke other into retaliation or into defending themselves; as a result people with aggressive behaviors might be harmed by others. Higher levels of violence exposure and aggressive beliefs are associated with more aggressive and less prosocial behavior

Passive behaviors- holding back ideas, feelings, and decisions. Increases the risk of being a perpetrator or victim of violence. People with passive behaviors don’t stand up for themselves or expect respect If they are harmed by others, they may keep it a secret in order to avoid conflict.

Assertive Behaviors- the honest expression of ideas, feelings, and decisions while respecting the rights and feelings of others. Decreases the risk for being perpetrators or victims of violence.

People with assertive behaviors expect respect, are not controlling, forceful or intimidating. They express anger appropriately and do not allow others to take advantage of them. They confront disrespectful behavior and don’t ignore it.

Every day, an estimated 227 children/youths (0-19 y/o) die as a result of interpersonal violence. Poor social skills, low academic achievement, impulsiveness, truancy, and poverty are among factors that fuel this violence.

Violence can be prevented by developing the life skills and prosocial behavior of youth Skills include: self-esteem building, self-monitoring, goal setting, anger/stress management, coping skills, impulse control, relaxation, conflict management, time management, resisting peer pressure, critical thinking, and prosocial behaviors

Prosocial Behaviors: actions which are intended to benefit other people or society as a whole; characterized by a concern about the rights, feelings, and welfare of others Examples include: empathy, concern for others, helping, sharing, donating, co-operating, and volunteering

Prosocial behaviors decreases the risk for being perpetrators or victims of violence Greater self-ability to resolve conflict peacefully is associated with less aggression and violence Greater knowledge and violence prevention skills are associated with less aggression and violence Summary:

Types of Behaviors Place 4 post it notes on your page. On the top write the 4 types of behaviors that we talked about today. On the underside of the post it, write a description of the behavior (in your own words!). Then on the notebook paper below draw a picture that helps you remember how this behavior either increases or decreases violence. *Use a minimum of 4 colors* Pg. 54
