Conflict & Violence

2 CONFLICT Conflict: is a struggle or disagreement about ideas, values, facts, occurrences, opinions, etc. Conflict occurs when individuals or groups are unable to resolve a disagreement or internal struggle. Conflict is expressed through behaviour ranging from mental anguish to physical violence.

3 VIOLENCE Violence: is using or threatening to use physical or emotional force against another person. It is used deliberately to cause physical or mental pain, injury or fear in the victim.

4 Violence is often a result of unresolved conflict.

5 FOUR TYPES OF CONFLICT INTERNAL CONFLICT (PERSONAL)
- a type of conflict that deals with personal issues - when one deals with morals or personal beliefs.

6 Internal Conflict example
A coach only plays players in the first half if they attend all practices the week before. The day before a playoff game, the star player skips practice. What does the coach do??

7 INTERPERSONAL CONFLICT
Interpersonal Conflict (person vs. person) A type of conflict that involves TWO people

8 INTRAGROUP CONFLICT Intragroup Conflict (in-group)
A conflict WITHIN one group

9 INTERGROUP CONFLICT Intergroup Conflict (Group vs. Group)
A conflict between TWO groups.

10 Triggers to Violence/Conflict
Blaming Criticizing another person Aggressive language Being confrontational Difference of option Discrimination Power trip A sense of superiority for whatever reason Gangs Weapons Drugs/alcohol Challenge to authority Showing off Group or peer pressure

11 Range of Ways People Handle Conflict
AGGRESSIVE behaviour behaviour is used to express personal feelings and opinions but involve insulting or threatening MESSAGES that violate the rights of the others involved

12 ASSERTIVE behaviour behaviour is the honest expression of thoughts and feelings without experiencing anxiety or threatening others

13 PASSIVE behaviour behaviour is used to avoid expressing personal feelings and opinions or making a choice; instead, the person goes along with the others even when they disagree or do not understand the situation or consequences.
