Common Core Standards: RL9-10.2, SL.9-10.5, L9-10.4 Friday, March 15th, 2019 Aim: How can we compare and contrast a modern interpretation of Romeo and Juliet with the original source material? Objective: Students will watch the film version of Romeo and Juliet in order to comprehend the events and language Shakespeare uses in the prologue and the first scene. Do Now: Do both of the following tasks. 1.) Quiz on the prologue and the first scene of Romeo and Juliet. 2.) How would you react to unrequited (one-sided) love? Do you think Benvolio’s advice to Romeo is good? What prediction can you make about the play moving forward? (choose one question)

Do Now/Quiz: Answer the question and turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains will share with the class. 2.) Mini-Lesson: Assign questions that are related to the Romeo and Juliet (1996) film. Students will compare and contrast the modern retelling of the story to the source material. 3.)Video: Watch the prologue and the first scene of the Romeo and Juliet film. 4.) Reflection: How does watching a performance of Romeo and Juliet change the way that we view the text? What do you think makes it more effective?
