Aim: How can we prepare to write an essay on Romeo and Juliet?
Objective: Students will begin brainstorming and writing their essay on Romeo and Juliet.
Do Now: Answer one of the following questions.
1.) Which of the two essay prompts are you going to choose? Why did you choose that one? OR
2.) What are your first steps in writing the essay? How do you normally start an essay?

Aim: How can we prepare to write an essay on Romeo and Juliet?
Objective: Students will begin brainstorming and writing their essay on Romeo and Juliet.
Agenda
1.) Do Now: Answer the Do now. Turn and talk with your tablemates.
2.) Brainstorming: Together we will be brainstorming for both of the essay prompts in order to better prepare for writing the essay.
3.): Work Period: Using ideas that we just brainstormed, start answering an essay question of your choosing. It can be informal writing, just try to get your ideas flowing onto the page. Try to write your introduction, one of your body paragraphs, or both!
4.): Reflection: What are your next steps in composing the essay? What assistance/guidance do you need from your teacher or peers to make sure you are successful?

3. If we’re choosing the prompt on parents we might want to look at the following:
The relationship between Romeo and his parents
The relationship between Juliet and her parents
Why we think the relationship between parent and child is the the way it is
Who acts more like a parent towards our characters
What these relationships reveal and how they affect the play/events (for example, how might a better relationship between the parent/child affect the play)

4. If we’re choosing the prompt on fate vs free will we might want to to look at the following:
What the prologue tells us (Hint: It spoils the play and tells us who dies)
Whether we get the feeling that Romeo and Juliet decide to do things on their own accord
Mercutio’s final words
Romeo talking about fate himself
The choice Juliet has to change the story (Can you think of it?)

5. Start Writing the Essay!
Use the rest of the class period to use what we just talked about to start working on your paper. The more you get done now, the less you’ll to do by Wednesday. I will be walking around to help anyone and answer questions in regards to the paper or the play!
