EPIC ENGINEERING: WELCOME TO THE TEAM PURPOSE

Objectives This session will enable you to: Understand more about the roles associated with a large engineering project. Appreciate a range of behaviours and skills relevant to various people involved in a STEM project. Be able to use the worksheet to guide and record your learning.

Welcome to the Team Meet the EPIC team, who make a project like HS2 possible. Watch this short video and think about the kinds of roles involved in a project like HS2. Teacher Notes Explain that this session is based on a major new engineering project called HS2. Ask students: • What they know about HS2. • What they think about this being a focus of major investment. • What opportunities it might open up for people of their generation. Show the HS2 introduction film, which includes an overview of job roles and shows the diversity on the HS2 Project.

Welcome to the Team Think about your STEMPowers. These are skills you will use in each of the activities. These skills are useful in STEM careers and further education. You will be rewarded for showing these skills. Teacher Notes Introduce the idea of STEMPowers and explain that a key purpose of this session is to develop these.

Introducing STEMPowers Creativity – Taking risks with new ideas. Teamwork – Working well with others. Communication – Sharing your ideas and feelings. Problem solving – Finding solutions. Investigation – Researching and analysing. Determination – Having resilience and perseverance. Respect – Respecting others, places and the environment. Teacher Notes Ask students to discuss and reflect on their STEMPowers to identify and explore employability behaviours and skills. Students should rate and give examples of when they have used them, and which ones they would like develop.

Welcome to the Team In your worksheet, self-assess your own STEMPowers. Which is your strongest? Which would you like to improve? Teacher Notes Ensure students have copy of student worksheet – Welcome to the Team.
