1 Example slides for Middle & High School to explain to NGSS to parents
This is a deck of slides that teachers can pick and choose to use, and modify to fit their needs. You may want to post your version of this on your website, share with a interested parent, have playing at a science event or use in anyway that serves your needs to explain NGSS. As this is an example, you may need to fill in information appropriate to your school & grade

2 School logo Teacher Name X Grade
Our School’s Plan for California’s Next Generation Science Standards Actively Involve Students in Science Prepare Students for College & Careers School logo Teacher Name X Grade This PowerPoint presentation was made possible (in part) by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York. The statements made and views expressed are solely the responsibility of the author.

3 Prepared for the Future
California’ New Science Standards Build on what students learned in previous years Integrate with Common Core literacy and math Prepare them for future education and careers Develop essential skills needed to be successful in college Introduce rewarding science, technology and engineering careers Make students critical thinkers, skills useful for all aspects of life

4 NGSS Teaches Skills for ALL Careers
Science prepares students with life skills for all careers Employers seek employees who Think critically Analyze information Solve complex problems Communicate effectively

5 Prepare for STEM Opportunities
25% of new jobs involve Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) Students who carry out investigations through memorable, hands-on experiences, where they do activities like a scientist does, are more likely to consider Science and Engineering careers There are many opportunities from technician to engineer that offer well paid employment

6 What is different about NGSS? Less of this: More of this:
Following step-by-step instructions Teachers presenting models explaining what happens in the natural world Discussions seeking one right answer Learning facts not connected to real science and engineering work Unrelated learning from Year to year Creating their own investigations Developing models to explain phenomena and solve problems Reasoning and supporting their conclusions with evidence Using science to solve real problems Learning connected engineering and science practices and concepts

7 NGSS Prepares Students for the Future
Think – Do – Explain Ask your own questions like a Scientist Do activities like a scientist might do Make your own discoveries and communicate Learn more though memorable experiences

8 Students Learn Essential Practices
1. Asking questions for science and defining problems for engineering 2. Developing and using models 3. Planning and carrying out investigations 4. Analyzing and interpreting data 5. Using mathematics and computational thinking 6. Constructing explanations for science and designing solutions for engineering 7. Engaging in argument from evidence 8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

9 What Students Might Investigate
Earth & Space Science – compare local weather data to other cities, and the analyze the variables that impact weather in these regions such as altitude, latitude and other factors. Life Science – explore the impact an antibiotic has on a bacterial population over many generations considering natural selection’s effect on certain traits. Physical Science – develop a model for water moving through a watershed over time and figure out what happened to the water that seems to disappear. Engineering Applications – determine the amount of energy that can be produced by ocean waves and use data to evaluate the components of two energy converter designs.

10 NGSS Develops Deeper Thinking
Patterns: Analyze and interpret data for patterns in the fossil record that document the existence, diversity, extinction, and change of life forms throughout the history of life on Earth. Cause and effect: Develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a pure substance when thermal energy is added or removed.

11 Deeper Thinking Skills
Scale, proportion, and quantity: Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells; either one cell or many different numbers and types of cells. Systems and system models: Construct and present arguments using evidence to support the claim that gravitational interactions are attractive and depend on the masses of interacting objects.

12 Deeper Thinking Energy and matter: Develop a model to describe the cycling of water through Earth’s systems driven by energy from the sun and the force of gravity. Structure and function: Develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials. Stability and change: Construct an argument supported by empirical evidence that changes to physical or biological components of an ecosystem affect populations.

13 Nurture Your Scientist at Home
Encourage your student’s natural curiosity Let student ask questions about phenomena Enable your student to guide the investigation Seek creative solutions while gardening, cooking and other activities at home Get involved in community activities, like water clean-ups or visit science centers
