1 Week Beginning 22nd April 2019
Stem Week 2019 Week Beginning 22nd April 2019 Instead of Take One Picture week this year, Loughton School will be hosting a STEM week across the school. This week will focus on bringing in skills from across the curriculum to work in team, explore ideas, as well as create products to solve the problems each year group will be faced with throughout the week. In addition to this, there will be visitors throughout the week who will support pupils through their learning journey who will hopefully inspire our pupils as well as help them understand the vast opportunities available to them in terms of careers. Talk to the parents about the woman in the photograph. RAF commander- first female to do so.

2 STEM- why is it so important?
Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths - STEM is everywhere Every sector – health & sport science as well as traditional It is at every level Importance to individuals, to industry and to society It is really interesting – so why do we make it so boring? There is a place for everyone STEM subjects are seen as critically important to the UK’s economic success. Engineering alone accounts for 25% of gross value added for the UK economy and manufactured goods account for 50% of UK exports . Science, engineering and technology underpin the whole economy, including power generation and electricity distribution, utilities, the food chain, healthcare, and our physical, transportation and information and communications infrastructure. Engineers and other STEM-qualified people are also pervasive across the wider economy and can be found in arts and entertainment sectors, sports, education and financial services. Some are employed in STEM roles in non STEM sectors, others are in non-STEM roles, but recruited because of their STEM background.

3 8 jobs that did not exist 10 years ago.

4 8 jobs that did not exist 10 years ago.
Big Data Architect: Based on all your searches, these people will suggest recommendations e.g if you were to search on Amazon… get fit, your suggested text/ purchases would be based on that one search.

5 Independent Respectful Creative Resilient What we will be asking the children to do throughout the week and how it ties in with LIL Independent- children are being asked to complete task which may not be teacher led. Creative- children can take basic models, change adapt and improve what they have been given. Inspired- understanding that what we have in our day to day come to be because one person thought about how they could improve or adapt an existing idea or thought to create something that would make day to day life more manageable. Resilient- not every idea will work out. But by evaluating ideas, children will be able to make their products better, identify what works, what could be made better. To quote Thomas Edison, the creator of the light bulb, as an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, "How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?" Edison replied, "I didn’t fail 1,000 times. I found 1000 ways that did not work.” Respectful- Team work: being able to take on board others ideas and suggestions as well as peer evaluations. Listening to the critique of others when you may not necessarily agree builds character and opens dialogue to solve problems. Inspired

6 So, what will STEM week look like at Loughton School?
Each year group will have their own challenge to solve. Classes will spend 2/3 days designing, creating, evaluating their designs. Each year group will receive a visit from a adult who will help them understand STEM, its importance in the world around us and why it is relevant to each child.

7 Kings and Queens carriage challenge
Year 3 Kings and Queens carriage challenge Developing, planning and communicating ideas Working with tools, equipment, materials and components to make quality products Evaluating processes and products Developing, planning and communicating ideas: Generate ideas for an item, considering its purpose and the user/s  Identify a purpose and establish criteria for a successful product.  Plan the order of their work before starting  Explore, develop and communicate design proposals by modelling ideas  Make drawings with labels when designing Working with tools, equipment, materials and components to make quality products Select tools and techniques for making their product  Measure, mark out, cut, score and assemble components with more accuracy  Work safely and accurately with a range of simple tools  Think about their ideas as they make progress and be willing change things if this helps them improve their work  Measure, tape or pin, cut and join fabric with some accuracy  Demonstrate hygienic food preparation and storage  Use finishing techniques strengthen and improve the appearance of their product using a range of equipment including ICT Evaluating processes and products Evaluate their product against original design criteria e.g. how well it meets its intended purpose  Disassemble and evaluate familiar products

8 Inspirational Inventors
Year 4 Inspirational Inventors Developing, planning and communicating ideas Working with tools, equipment, materials and components to make quality products Evaluating processes and products

9 Year 5 Moving buggy challenge
Developing, planning and communicating ideas Working with tools, equipment, materials and components to make quality products Evaluating processes and products Plus….competition! Discuss with parent the work conducted with Rockwell Automation.

10 Year 6 Desert Island challenge
Problem solving Developing, planning and communicating ideas Working with tools, equipment, materials and components to make quality products Evaluating processes and products

11 STEM Week sharing afternoon
All stakeholders invited Celebration of the week’s successes Badges given out which reflect the school’s values. STEM ambassadors

12 So what can you do? Do you have a skill that you think share with our pupils during the week? We would welcome any help available especially if you work in any STEM industry.
