Lecture: What Is Psychology? Why people do the things they do is an age-old question. However, psychology—the science concerned with behavior, in both human and nonhuman animals—first appeared in the 1870s. Despite its youth, it is a broad discipline, essentially spanning subject matter from biology to sociology. Psychologists have doctoral degrees. They study the intersection of two critical relationships: one between brain function and behavior, and another between the environment and behavior. As scientists, psychologists follow scientific methods, using careful observation, experimentation, and analysis. But psychologists also need to be creative in the way they apply scientific findings.

Why Study Psychology? Gain a better understanding of why people behave as they do Understand your OWN behavior Psychology will give you new ways to look at and interpret the world and people who inhabit it.

Behavior and Mental Processes Behavior is an OBSERVED action Voluntary or involuntary Mental Processes are cognitive activities Dreams, perceptions, thoughts and memories People’s emotions and feelings affect both of these concepts. Psychological Constructs are used to talk about things that cannot be seen, touched or measured. (such as dreams and thoughts)

Goals of Psychology Better understand behavior and mental processes Explain, predict and control behavior (E.g., Sports Psychologists = positive visualization) Help people accomplish their own goals.

Psychology as a Science A social science with foundations in the natural sciences (Sociology vs. Biology) Research Surveys – data collected by asking questions of people from a certain group Experimentation – Animal vs. Human subjects involves ethical concerns Psychological Theories Theories attempt to explain why things are the way they are and why they happen Theories employ principles that influence behavior/mental processes (E.g., If you study more you will probably get better grades)

Types of Psychology (Sports Psych should be changed to Community) Learning Task – Part A – 20 minutes As a group you will use the provided brochure to explore career opportunities for college graduates with psychology majors.   Get into pairs. You will be assigned a subfield of psychology. Task: Create a poster that includes the following information: a) Title of career b) Description of career c) Education level needed for career d) A typical day someone would have in that field Make sure your poster is visually appealing and has information organized in an easily accessible manner. Evolutionary Psychology Study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation, sand selective fitness influence human thought, feeling, and behavior. Psychologists study behaviors based on genetics; mating, aggression, helping behavior, and communication. Paradox: Behaviors adaptive in ancient times might not be useful in the modern world. Daily Roles: Education, research, and sometimes private practice. Evolutionary Psychologists in private practice work with individuals and groups who seek to change unwanted behavior.
