Thinking About Psychology: The Science of Mind and Behavior 2e Charles T. Blair-Broeker Randal M. Ernst

Methods Domain

Introductory Chapter

Fact or Falsehood (1-1) 10 min Psychology as a Science (1-3) 20 mins

Aliens Have Landed Video Activity The Value of Eyewitness Activity

The Value of Eyewitnesses Much of the evidence cited for proof of the Roswell incident is based on eyewitness accounts of what people saw 50 years ago, as well as on hearsay - what someone else heard from a supposed eyewitness. By staging an incident and studying the accuracy of eyewitness accounts, you can see how what people actually see and what people remember seeing might vary.

Objective: Study the accuracy of eyewitness accounts PROCEDURE Design and set up a scene to play out in a classroom. The premise is that you are going in to make an announcement. But, in doing so, something or someone will come in, and do something unusual. We will want a reaction from someone “on the inside”, maybe the teacher.

One week later, have student teams interview the observers individually. Ask the observers to describe, in detail, what they remember about the staged scene. Have each team report back to class how accurate the observations were. Repeat the interviews at selected intervals (two weeks, one month) after the staged event.

Process We will run this in two groups. In your group come up with a plan and be prepared to report back to the bigger group. Choose 3 people to run the “skit” / stunt. The others will be responsible for interviewing the students, in one weeks’ time, so will need to come up with a) questions b) a plan – how many students will each group interview, where, etc.
