Third Grade Newsletter GIFTED GAZETTE 2.6 Nov. 27th - Dec. 1st What we’re learning this week… Vocabulary & Test Schedule Reading: The Search for Delicious by Natalie Babbitt This week we will… begin reading our new fantasy fiction novel determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, distinguishing literal from non-literal language. Language/Writing: use a “mentor sentence” to apply grammar skills Identify and use idioms and other figurative language to enhance writing and paint a picture with words. holiday-themed journal writing Spelling: There will be no Friday spelling test or homework this week. Journal writing will be assessed for conventional spelling of high-frequency and other studied words and for adding suffixes to base words (sitting, smiled, cries, happiness). Students have been learning to use reference materials, including dictionaries, thesauruses, peer editors, and computer resources. They will be expected to consult these resources as needed to check and edit their writing. Math: This week we will… solve two-step word problems applying the four operations (+ - x ÷). represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding. enrichment of curriculum through Math Stars problem solving Project of the Week (P.O.W.): in-class assignment due Friday Research: “Christmas Around the World” and family traditions multi-week enrichment project. Students are expected to consult dictionaries, peer editors, and computer resources to monitor spelling when writing. Please use MobyMax for individualized spelling activities. Math: Problem-solving test on Friday Dec. 20~ 1/2 day for students Dec. 21-Jan2~ Winter Holiday (no school) Jan. 3~ School begins in 2018 A note from the teachers Does your family have a holiday tradition that you would like to share with our class?
