Zonta’s Vision Zonta International envisions a world in which women’s rights are recognized as human rights and every woman is able to achieve her full potential. In such a world, women have access to all resources and are represented in decision making positions on an equal basis with men. In such a world, no woman lives in fear of violence.

Zonta’s Founders In 1919, a group of forward-thinking executive women came together in Buffalo, New York, to promote professionalism among its members and serve the needs of girls and young women in the community. In 1919, a group of forward-thinking executive women came together in Buffalo, New York, to use their combined expertise in service to their community. Not satisfied with the predominantly social nature of many women’s organizations at the time, the women who founded Zonta envisioned a new kind of service organization – one that would promote professionalism among its executive members while serving the needs of girls and young women in the community.

Today, there are 500 clubs in 33 countries throughout Europe. In 1923, Zonta funds its first project, Near East Relief, to care for 115,000 orphan children in Smyrna, Turkey, and furnish means of self-support for the women. To date, Zonta has provided more than US$19.2 million to benefit women in 35 countries. In 1938, the Amelia Earhart Fellowship is established in honor of the Zontian following her disappearance. Today, the fellowship of US$10,000 is awarded up to 30 talented women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace-applied sciences or engineering around the globe. Zonta has awarded more than 1,500 AE Fellowships, totaling more than US$10 million, to more than 1,100 women representing 73 countries.

Today, there are 249 Z clubs in 22 countries and 117 Golden Z clubs in 19 countries. In the same year, the first South American Zonta club established in Santiago, Chile. Today, there are 5 clubs in South America (3 in Chile and 2 in Uruguay) In 1952, the first Asian Zonta club is established in Manila, Philippines. Today, there are 186 clubs in 13 countries throughout Asia. In 1965, the first Oceanic Zonta club is established in New Zealand. Today, there are 136 clubs in New Zealand and Australia. In 1969, Zonta receives consultative status at the United Nations. Zonta International advocates primarily through its General Consultative Status with ECOSOC at the United Nations. The Zonta International UN Committee has representatives in New York, Vienna, Geneva, Paris and Bangkok.

Today, there are 19 clubs in 9 countries throughout Africa. In 1983, Zonta receives participatory status at the Council of Europe. In 1986, Zonta becomes the first non-governmental organization to support UNIFEM (later UN Women) with projects in Argentina, Botswana, the Comoros Islands, Thailand and Zimbabwe. In 2018, Zonta International began a new partnership with UN Women in Jordan, which is hosting 1.4 million Syrian refugees. Today, up to 32 district awardees receive US$1,500 and 10 international awardees receive an additional US$4,000. Zonta has given nearly 900 awards (includes international awards), totaling more than US$900,000, to nearly 800 young women representing 56 countries. In 1998, the Zonta International Strategies to End Violence Against Women (ZISVAW) project is adopted as an ongoing program. To date, Zonta has provided more than US$9.5 million to support projects in 46 countries. In the same year, the Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship is established to encourage more women to pursue education and careers in business. Today, up to 32 district scholars receive US$2,500 and 6 international awardees receive an additional US$8,000. Zonta has given nearly 600 awards totaling more than US$1.3 million to more than 400 women representing 57 countries. In 2012, Zonta launches its Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women annual campaign. The campaign, which continues today, raises awareness of the global pandemic of women’s rights violations and unites Zonta clubs worldwide in conducting impactful advocacy actions to fight violence against women and gender inequality. In 2018, Zonta’s commitment to end early marriage results in a US$2 million contribution to the Ending Child Marriage project in partnership with UNICEF USA and UNFPA. Zonta International commits to supporting the UNICEF/UNFPA Global Programme to Accelerate Action to End Child Marriage in 12 countries: Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Yemen and Zambia.

Zonta Today 1,200 Zonta clubs in 63 countries Approximately 29,000 Zontians More than US$40.9 million given through Zonta International Foundation Zonta Countries One hundred years later, the legacy of Zonta’s early members can be seen and felt through nearly 1,200 Zonta clubs in 63 countries across the globe. While the world has changed dramatically over the last century, approximately 29,000 Zontians today remain committed to the professionalism, fellowship and service that led Zonta’s visionary founders to come together. Today, Zonta’s history extends beyond the community service of each individual Zonta club. Zonta International has provided more than US$40.9 million through the Zonta International Foundation to empower women and girls and expand their access to education, health care, economic opportunities and safe living conditions.
