Prescription vs. OTC

Prescription medicines: A drug that cannot be purchased legally w/o a doctors written order. A prescription from a doctor is required for stronger pain relievers, all antibiotics, and psychologically oriented drugs, such as tranquilizers and antidepressants. Important Terms to Remember: Brand Name: A name used to attract name recognition and customer loyalty. Generic Name: A drug product that is comparable to brand/reference listed drug products in dosage form, strength, route of administration, quality and performance characteristics, and intended use. After the patent for a drug expires, any company may manufacture it under FDA approved guidelines which increases competition, reduces the cost of purchasing the drug, and makes the drug available from non-brand name sources. Side Effect: Is an undesirable reaction or consequence to a medication. Expiration Date: Is the date after which medication may no longer be fresh or useful. Pharmacist: Is someone who prepares and sells prescription medicine Generic Drug- a drug product that is comparable to brand/reference listed drug product in dosage form, strength, route of administration, quality and performance characteristics, and intended use.

Precautions with medicines: Know the name of the medication Follow labels Up-to-Date Store Properly Drink at least a half a cup of water Do not drink hot beverages Do not crush or dissolve capsules or tablets Never share medicine!
