6 Testing and Approving New Medicines
Testing can take from 6 to 10 years Approval means it is both 1. Safe 2. Medically effective if used as intended.

7 Release to the Public Two Ways the FDA releases medicines to the public Prescription Medicines – written approval of a doctor and dispensed by a pharmacist OTC – without prescription

8 Medicine Misuse Medicine Misuse – use of a medicine in a way other than the one intended Examples: Giving your prescription medicine to someone else Taking too much or too little Taking for longer than it was prescribed

9 Medicine Misuse Taking someone else’s medicine
Discontinuing use without telling the doctor Mixing medicines

Date prescription was filled Prescription number Whether refills are allowed Special instructions
