It can be defined as the use of technology, and particularly mobile phones and the internet, to deliberately hurt, upset, harass or embarrass someone else.

The profile of the cyberbully There are two kinds of people who are likely to bully: Those who are popular. These kids may bully because: They see it as a way to stay popular Hurting others makes them feel powerful Those who are not socially successful. These kids may bully because: It helps them cope with their own low self-esteem They think it will help them fit in with other kids They have trouble empathizing with their “victims”

Where does Cyberbullying stem from In general, bullies’ behavior usually stems from their own problems: These kids tend to: have less involved parents, to be less excited about school to be depressed and anxious They often have trouble controlling their emotions and impulses and find it hard to follow rules

Some additional reasons people may do the bullying online Anonymity: cyberbullying allows bullies to avoid facing their victims, so it requires less courage and provides the illusion that bullies won’t get caught Ignorance of the consequences: 81% said that they believe other people cyberbully cause they think it ‘s funny. They don’t always see their victims’ reactions in person, so cyberbullies may not realize how much damage they are doing Social pressure: some c/b may think their behavior is normal and socially acceptable, especially when friends support their bullying Jealous of the victim= wanting to hurt the victim Getting even because they were cyberbullied by their victim

What can Cyberbullying cause to victims? Severe, long-term or frequent cyberbullying can leave the victim at greater risk for: Depression. A recent study (American Journal of Public Health)found that about 33% of students who had been cyberbullied had symptoms of depression Anxiety Suicide attempts (38% of victims attempted suicide and 16 kids killed themselves the last few years) Many kids and teens who are cyberbullyied don’t want to tell a teacher or a parent, because they may feel ashamed of the social stigma or because they are afraid that their computer will be taken away.

Victim’s profile Signs of cyberbullying vary, but most of the common behaviors of a victim may be the following: being emotionally upset during or after using the Internet or the cell phone being very secretive and protective of their digital life Avoiding school or friends and family gatherings Bad grades at school
