Definition How would you define Cyberbullying? WebWeWant, Enable, http://www.esafetylabel.eu: Cyberbullying – sometimes also called online bullying – is a very complex issue. It can be defined as the use of technology, and particularly mobile phones and the internet, to deliberately hurt, upset, harass or embarrass someone else.

Maria Drosou’s Presentation (Safe Internet For All) What is cyberbullying? Term: Cyberbullying is the use of technology (social and digital media) to: harass, threaten, embarrass or target another person. It occurs mostly among young people. Recent studies have found that 1 in 4 teens (25%) have been the victims of cyberbullying and about 1 in 6 (16.6%) admit to having cyberbullied someone. Maria Drosou’s Presentation (Safe Internet For All)

The definition of bullying isn’t exactly what we know of from movies. Have a look at the following situations. Do you think it is a case of Cyberbullying? Why? Why not? The definition of bullying isn’t exactly what we know of from movies. L’ ubol, 18 years old.

Definition: What is verbal abuse?

Privacy protection Rules for privacy protection, personal data protection, GDPR, etc. Have you ever heard about these? Do these mean anything for you? Create your own Word Cloud about these ideas. Sharing emotional stories can influence people in a positive way and make them stand up against bullying. Ida, 16 years old.

Survival of the most powerful The survival of the fittest (or the most powerful), is a phrase coming from Charles Darwin theory of natural selection (evolution of species). What do you know about this theory? What does this mean to you? Can we describe as more fit (or more powerful) those who possess more money or political power? Sometimes less powerful people try to upturn. Are they more vulnerable?

Empathy Encourage others, give them strength, do something! In order to deal with threats related to internet use, we need to develop empathy and be more humane. Noelia, 18 years old. Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference, i.e., the capacity to place oneself in another's position. (Wikipedia: Bellet, Paul S.; Michael J. Maloney (1991). "The importance of empathy as an interviewing skill in medicine") Encourage others, give them strength, do something!

The profile of the cyberbully There are two kinds of people who are likely to bully: Those who are popular. These kids may bully because: They see it as a way to stay popular Hurting others makes them feel powerful Those who are not socially successful. These kids may bully because: It helps them cope with their own low self-esteem They think it will help them fit in with other kids They have trouble empathizing with their “victims”

Where does Cyberbullying stem from In general, bullies’ behavior usually stems from their own problems: These kids tend to: have less involved parents, to be less excited about school to be depressed and anxious They often have trouble controlling their emotions and impulses and find it hard to follow rules

Some additional reasons people may do the bullying online Anonymity: cyberbullying allows bullies to avoid facing their victims, so it requires less courage and provides the illusion that bullies won’t get caught Ignorance of the consequences: 81% said that they believe other people cyberbully cause they think it ‘s funny. They don’t always see their victims’ reactions in person, so cyberbullies may not realize how much damage they are doing Social pressure: some c/b may think their behavior is normal and socially acceptable, especially when friends support their bullying Jealous of the victim= wanting to hurt the victim Getting even because they were cyberbullied by their victim

What can Cyberbullying cause to victims? Severe, long-term or frequent cyberbullying can leave the victim at greater risk for: Depression. A recent study (American Journal of Public Health)found that about 33% of students who had been cyberbullied had symptoms of depression Anxiety Suicide attempts (38% of victims attempted suicide and 16 kids killed themselves the last few years) Many kids and teens who are cyberbullyied don’t want to tell a teacher or a parent, because they may feel ashamed of the social stigma or because they are afraid that their computer will be taken away.

Victim’s profile Signs of cyberbullying vary, but most of the common behaviors of a victim may be the following: being emotionally upset during or after using the Internet or the cell phone being very secretive and protective of their digital life Avoiding school or friends and family gatherings Bad grades at school

Victim’s profile Anger, changes in mood, behavior, sleep or appetite Wanting to stop using the computer or cell phone Being nervous when getting an instant message, text or e- mail Avoiding discussion about computer or cell phone activities

Ways of protecting ourselves Ignore Record Reach out Cut off the bully Go high-tech

What we MUST NOT DO Don’t bully the bully Don’t send the bullying message to a friend Don’t believe the bully When talking online, ask yourself if this is something you should say to a persons’ face. If not, DON’T SEND IT Bottom line: DON’T HIDE BEHIND FEAR
