Why is the Commission acting? Commitments in the EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy and the Roadmap to resource efficiency to come forward with a strategy on Green Infrastructure (GI). Council and EP mandate to develop a GI strategy, "as contribution to further integrating biodiversity considerations into other EU policies" Communication on "Green Infrastructure (GI) – Enhancing Europe's Natural Capital" adopted by College on 6 May 2013 >> policy signal towards decision makers, planners and promoters to invest in GI projects at local, regional, national and cross-boundary level.

Working Group on GI Implementation and Restoration (WG GIIR) The objective of this WG is to support the implementation of actions of the GI Strategy as set out in the Commission Communication and to provide a platform for sharing best practices on GI deployment. The WG will also address the linkages between the restoration of degraded ecosystems and the deployment of GI. Strategic issues to be reported back to CGBN. Service contract to support work of the Working Group. Meeting 24/03/14: First exchange on priorities of WG Next meeting June 2014 Member States not yet present: CY, SU, EL, IE, LV, LT, LU, MT, NL, PT, RO, SI, SV

Working Group on GI Implementation and Restoration (WG GIIR) Focus on: (a) the exchange of information between EC, MS and civil society on the implementation of tasks mentioned in the GI COM; (b) giving added value to EC actions by transferring them to the national context and vice versa; (c) measures/processes which MS/civil society can undertake to support the deployment of GI on national/regional and local levels, in particular on capacity building, training and education and participatory processes; (d) the exchange of information on best practice in relation to ecosystem restoration and its contribution to GI deployment. (e) developing useful indicators to monitor the uptake of GI, and on descriptors on which GI should in particular be funded by public and private funds.
