Math-7 NOTES Solving Equations: Addition Equations: x + 8 = 2 DATE: ______/_______/_______ What: One-step equations (Addition & Subtraction) Why: To solve addition and subtraction one-step equations using both algebra tiles and the traditional paper/ pencil method. NAME: Solving Equations: GOAL: To get the variable by itself (“isolating” the variable)!! RULE: What you do to one side of the equals (=) sign, you MUST do to the other side! Addition Equations: x + 8 = 2 x + (-3) = 7 40 + x = -11 4) -28 + x = -3 5) -25 = x + (-75) Paper/Pencil Method: Paper/Pencil Method:

Remember– “minus a negative” equals a POSITIVE!! Subtraction Equations: x – 4 = 7 x – 3 = -2 x – 22 = -2 4) x – 64 = 30 5) x – 34 = -3 Paper/Pencil Method: Paper/Pencil Method: Remember– “minus a negative” equals a POSITIVE!! What about the “double negative” equations? 6) x – (-2) = 5 7) x – (-9) = -11 8) 5 – (-x) = 15
