3.3 Solving Equations Using Addition or Subtraction
2
Equations Have an equal sign Directions: Solve Solving means to find the value of the variable by isolating it Do inverse operations to isolate the variable
3
Inverse Operations The Inverse of Addition is: Subtraction The Inverse of Subtraction is: Addition
4
The Addition Property of Equality: if a = b, then a + c = b + c
5
Example 1: a - 5 = -2 +5 +5 a = 3
6
The Subtraction Property of Equality: if a = b, then a - c = b - c
7
Example :2 19 = k + 7 -7 -7 12 = k
8
Example 3: a + 1.5 = 3.2 -1.5 -1.5 a = 1.7 when you add/sub decimals Remember to line up the decimal place.
9
Example 4: x + 6.8 =5.2 -6.8 -6.8 __________________ X= -1.6
10
Example 5:
11
Example 6: When you add/sub fractions you need a common denominator
12
Example 7 : Remember to turn all mixed numbers as improper fractions
