Studying Humans and Culture Human Geography Studying Humans and Culture

Family Dobe Ju - Hoansi The most basic unit of social structure The most common way people organize themselves Nuclear Family: Father, Mother, Siblings Extended Family: Aunts, Uncles, Cousins Dobe Ju – Hoansi: Nuclear families rarely live together. Each member is named after an elder. Strict family rules.

Social Structures Family Clubs Unions Political Parties Government

Rural and Urban Life What helped us improve from completely rural life to urban? Technology Trade People left farms and countrysides to live and work in big, urban cities

Agriculture and Industry Subsistence Farming: growing food for just your family and yourself. -working with simple tools -grow several different crops according to preferences -eat what they grow and have nothing left over to sell to others Commercial Farming: growing crops to sell. -working with machines, chemicals and fertilizers -growing crops over one large area -focused growing (they do not grow many different kinds of crops)

Benefits to Commercial Farming Created Industry. (Businesses that make finished products) Use science and modern inventions What are some farming inventions we use today to farm? Life is more comfortable in a modernized world: more food, safer drinking water, more health workers, hospitals, rescue responders, etc.

Population

Negative Affects of Over Population The world is no longer producing enough food for everyone People are using up the Natural Resources found on Earth We are running out of space to dump our waste

What can we do to help? Eliminate the amount of waste we produce Plant trees and gardens! Do more subsistence farming…why? Ride your bike Donate food to shelters

Art and Culture -Art expresses what is important to people -Shares culture with others -Expresses feelings -Depicts situations (related to folk stories)
