Presentation transcript:

1.4 Ordered Pairs and Relations Objective: Students should be able to identify all the parts of a coordinate plane. Using the plane, they should be able to plot a point and construct an ordered pair given a point. They should also know the difference between a domain and range value. 1.4 Ordered Pairs and Relations

Coordinate Basics Coordinate plane: intersection of horizontal (x axis) and vertical line (y axis). Characteristics of plane. X-axis: horizontal line Y-axis: vertical line Origin: (0, 0) Ordered pairs (x, y) Quadrants: 4

Plotting Points Steps: Plot following points: (2, -3), (0, 2), (-2,-5) Start at origin Move left(-)/right(+) based on x-coord. Move up(+)/down(-) based on y-coord. Plot point Plot following points: (2, -3), (0, 2), (-2,-5)

Student Examples Plot the following points A(-3, 4) B(2, 5) C(-2, -4)

Finding Points Steps: Find x-coordinate Find y-coordinate Write ordered pairs Give coordinates of point A, B, C.

Student Examples List the given coordinates. A: B: C: D: E: F:

Information Relation: set of ordered pairs. Domain: x coordinate, input Range: y coordinate, output

Find the domain/range, set up as table, graph (2,1) (1,5) (-2,6) (5,4)

Find the domain/range, set up as table, graph (5,3)(-2,6)(2,1)(3,5)
