M1 Level 2 (Intermediate to high) Mrs Raineau Legal English 2017-2018 M1 Level 2 (Intermediate to high) Mrs Raineau Good morning . I am going to hand out two sheets of paper this one is blank, please fold it, then write your first name on it, large enough that I can see it and put that on your desk this one contains information about the course I will also give you the course handout. This is the legal English class for L3 students and this is a Level 1 Group. I am Mrs Raineau, and at the top of the sheet you will see my email address and the address of my website. I'll say more about that later.

M1 Legal English Combines legal knowledge and language skills US law – jurisdiction, justiciability, criminal law (Semester 1) English law - tort and contract law (Semester 2) To begin today, I am going to spend a few minutes telling you about the English course in L3 . You don’t need to take notes for this part – its all written on the paper I’m handing round. The Course As in the second year, the English course is based on a combination of legal knowledge and language skills. So on one hand you will study aspects of American and English law. In the first semester we will study Constitutional rights and criminal procedure in the USA. There is a class handout which contains the course content, you will need to bring this to every class. As you can see, as in L2, there is a facts section at the start of the chapter - this is the information that you will need to know for the exam. In the second semester, we will be looking at English law and the English legal system. In the exam you are required to know the course, know the facts that we will study. As you move through the years at Assas the content of the English classes becomes more and more important, you will not pass the exam if you do not know the content.

L3 Legal English Language skills Academic legal skills Reading and presenting cases Case studies / problem questions Professional skills But this is also a language class. So we will work on your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in the context of the course, and do specific work one expanding your legal vocabulary. We will also work on academic legal skills. In particular you will be reading US and UK Supreme Court opinions, and listening to US SC opinion announcements. You will also work on case studies. This means that you are given the facts of case, and you are required to use the legal principles learned in class to identify the legal issues and to give your opinion about how a court would rule. This exercise is the main part of the exam. Finally we will also work on broader professional skills, including writing a CV and job interviews.
