Presentation transcript:

Taxonomy is the science of naming and classifying organisms. BIGGEST FLAP in the Back- Flap 1 The Linnaean Classification System Taxonomy is the science of naming and classifying organisms. Carolus Linnaeus was a Swedish botanist who, in the 1750s, developed the scientific naming system still used today.

The system is based on physical and structural characteristics. BIGGEST FLAP in the Back- Flap 1 The system is based on physical and structural characteristics. The Linnaean system is not a perfect system. It only accounts for physical similarities and not genetic similarities.

Scientific name: -Genus species - Always underlined or in italics Flap 2 Binomial nomenclature- a system that gives each species a two-part scientific name using Latin words. “two name naming system” Scientific name: -Genus species - Always underlined or in italics - Genus is Capitalized Species is lower case Ex.- wolf- Canis lupus

There are six kingdoms of life: Flap 3 Kingdom There are six kingdoms of life: Bacteria Archae Protista/ Protozoa Fungi Plantae Animalia

Human Kingdom  Animalia Flap 3 Human Kingdom  Animalia

Phylum Flap 4 One or more phylums make up a kingdom. Human Phylum  Chordata

One or more classes make up a phylum. Flap 5 Class One or more classes make up a phylum. Human Class  Mammalia

Flap 6 Order Human Order  Primates

Human Family  Hominidae Flap 7 Family Human Family  Hominidae

Flap 8 Genus Includes one or more physically similar species that are thought to be closely related Human Genus  Homo

Flap 9 Species Group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce offspring. Human Species  sapiens Human Scientific Name  Homo sapiens
