Battle of the Books 5th Grade

Battle of the Books is designed… To recognize students who enjoy reading To expose students to a variety of literature To increase reading comprehension To encourage students to work as a team

Battle of the Books is an optional reading Program available to… 4th Graders & 5th Graders

Students must read ALL 6 of the designated books!

After celebrating their first nine “same-day” birthdays together, Amanda and Leo, have a falling out on their tenth birthday and do not speak for the following year. As they prepare to celebrate their eleventh birthdays separately, peculiar things begin to happen.

Unpopular sixth-grader Burdette "Bird" Weaver persuades the new boy at school, whom everyone thinks is mean and dumb, to be her partner for a spelling bee that might win her everything she's ever wanted.

Eleven-year-old Melody has a photographic memory Eleven-year-old Melody has a photographic memory. She's the smartest kid in her whole school, but no one knows it. If only she could speak up, if only she could tell people what she thinks and knows, but she can't, because Melody can't talk. She can't walk. She can't write. Being stuck inside her head is making Melody go out of her mind—that is, until she discovers something that will allow her to speak for the first time ever.

Twelve-year-old Peg contracts polio in 1949, but she survives the initial paralysis and eventually learns to walk again.

The adventures of Despereaux Tilling, a small mouse of unusual talents, the princess that he loves, the servant girl who longs to be a princess, and a devious rat determined to bring them all to ruin.

Steven Satlow is an eight-year-old boy living in Brooklyn, New York, which means he only cares about one thing — the Dodgers. But then Steve hears a rumor that an African American family is moving to his all-Jewish neighborhood. It's 1948 and some of his neighbors are against it. Steve knows that this is wrong. His hero, Jackie Robinson, broke the color barrier in baseball the year before. Then it happens — Steve's new neighbor is Jackie Robinson! This is going to be the best baseball season yet!

How can you try-out for the team? Start reading the books NOW! Pay close attention to the details in each story. Take a bookmark, so you can keep track your own progress. Read the Battle of the Books letter and share it with your parents.
