Christopher Newport

Christopher Newport was born in 1560 in England. France and Spain had already made a claim in North America and King James of England desperately wanted a claim for England in the New World.

He started a company called the Virginia Company. The job of the Virginia Company was to bring settlers to the New World. Christopher Newport was hired by the Virginia Company.

As an explorer, Christopher Newport had three goals: he wanted to find riches, find a western sea route to Asia, and set up a colony in Virginia. As an admiral, Christopher Newport was put in sole charge of the journey to Virginia.

As an admiral, Christopher Newport was put in sole charge of the journey to Virginia. On this exploration to Virginia, Christopher Newport had three ships: the Discovery, the Susan Constant and the Godspeed.

He took 120 people with him to set up his colony. Christopher Newport arrived in Virginia in 1607. They set up a colony along the James River. They named it Jamestown after King James of England. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in North America.

One of the colonists who came with Christopher Newport was Captain John Smith. John Smith made the colonists gather food and build houses instead of searching for gold and spices. He also bought corn from the Indians.

Christopher Newport made 4 more voyages bringing supplies and people to the colony in Jamestown. He is famous for helping establish the Jamestown colony and for being one of the first men to reach the fall line of the James River.
