COUNCIL A group that makes rules and decisions.

4 A land that is settled far from the country that governs it.
COLONY A land that is settled far from the country that governs it.

5 VIRGINIA COMPANY OF LONDON
A group of wealthy people that formed a company to start a new colony, the colony of Virginia.

6 JAMES I England’s new king that granted a charter to the Virginia Company in June 1606.

7 CAPTAIN CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT
Commanded the Virginia Company's voyage to Jamestown in 1606.

8 JAMESTOWN The first permanent English settlement in North America in 1607 on the James River, named James Fort in honor of King James *this site was selected because they thought it could easily be defended,had plenty of fresh water, and no Powhatan appeared to be using the land.

9 CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH Soldier, mapmaker, adventurer, and writer. A Virginia Council member, who was also an experienced soldier. He taught the colonists how to protect and provide for themselves.
