What was the ‘Scramble for Africa’? Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson I will be able to... Define what the ‘Scramble for Africa’ was. Identify the European powers who were involved. Examine why the European powers were involved in the ‘Scramble for Africa’.

Definition: Scramble for Africa - was the invasion, occupation and colonization of African territory by European powers during the period between 1881 and 1914 Copy this definition into your books please.

Task: Using the map of Africa to help you, write down the countries that had the most colonies. Why was African territories important to the British? (Think of why India was important to the British empire)

Task: Imagine that you are an African or Indian native whose land have just been controlled by the British. Write a diary entry on your thoughts. You should include: Key events, on how the British took control. Why the British wanted to take control of the lands. Are you treated well, and why? What are your views on the Berlin conference? Explain what it is, and how it effects you.

Plenary: Finally, write down something that: Has made you think You would like to know more on You were unsure of/confused.
