S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Why is setting goals important?

Goal setting is important so you can: Work towards achieving something important to you. Challenge yourself. Motivate yourself. Make positive changes in your life. Improve the way you feel about yourself.

SMART Goal S – Specific M – Measurable A – Action R – Realistic T – Timely A SMART Goal is a ruler for measuring learning.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals S – Specific (What do I want to measure?) M – Measurable (How am I going to measure it?) A – Action (What actions/steps do I need to take to reach my goal?) R – Realistic (Is this an achievable goal?) T – Timely (When do I plan to achieve my goal?)

Michael Jordan on Goal Setting I approach everything step by step. I have always set short term goals. When I reached that goal, I set another. I gained a little confidence every time I came through. Step by step, I can’t see any other way of accomplishing anything.

Examples of Smart goals I will make the Honor Roll for the 3rd marking period I will hand in my math homework on time during the 3rd marking period I will complete my homework on time at least 4 out of 5 days during the 3rd marking period I will raise my Math grade from a 76 to a 81 or higher by the end of the 3rd marking period I will raise my Social Studies grade 3 points or higher by the end of the 3rd marking period I will get better tests scores in Science during the 3rd marking period I will hand in all projects I am given during the 3rd marking period on time I will raise my grade in Art from a 70 to a74 or higher for the 3rd marking period I will improve my attendance during the 3rd marking period I will decrease the number of times I am tardy during the 3rd marking period

Example of the steps to create a SMART goal:

What specific thing will I accomplish? S – Specific What specific thing will I accomplish? I will hand in my math homework on time during the 3rd marking period.

How am I going to measure my goal? M – Measurable How am I going to measure my goal? I will have 0 missing homework assignments each week.

What will I DO to accomplish my goal? A – Action What will I DO to accomplish my goal? I will write down all my assignments in my assignment pad. I will double check to make sure I have all of the materials I need to do my work. I will do my homework at a set time each day. I will put all of my homework back in my backpack once complete. I will check Infinite Campus to see my progress.

Is this a realistic goal? Yes ____ NO ____ R – Realistic Is this a realistic goal? Yes ____ NO ____ I feel this goal is realistic. I might have trouble setting a good time to do homework because of soccer practice, but I can make sure I complete all homework before dinner. I have the tools I need to achieve it. I will make sure I bring home all the materials I need to complete the assignment(s). I will make sure I put the completed homework assignment(s) in my backpack so I can give it to my teacher the next day.

When do I plan to achieve my goal? T- Timely When do I plan to achieve my goal? I will achieve this goal during the 3rd marking period.

The following slide will show you what the SMART Goal sheet you will be filling out looks like.
