What is the nervous system? A network of nerve cells (neurons) that transmits signals throughout the body Arm levitation (don’t write this down) Functions? To detect changes (sensory neurons) To make a decision (associative neurons) To respond (motor neurons)

3 Types of Neurons Sensory neurons (afferent) Found on skin or other sensory organs (eyes, tongue, within nose, etc) Carry impulses to spinal cord and brain Associative neurons (interneurons) Carry impulses from sensory neurons to motor neurons Make decisions Motor neurons (efferent) Carry messages from brain and spinal cord to muscles and glands

How does an impulse work? A stimulus creates an impulse Impulse travels into neuron through dendrites and out through axon Neurotransmitter is released and carries impulse across the synapse

Divisions of Nervous System Central Nervous System (CNS) Main communication system of body Consists of brain and spinal cord Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) Cranial nerves and spinal nerves Somatic Nervous System- controls voluntary movements of skeletal muscle Autonomic Nervous System- controls involuntary actions of organs (smooth) and heart (cardiac)
