1 Anatomy - Nervous System
Characteristics & Functions of the Nervous System November 28, 2017

2 Anatomy-Nervous System Introduction
What do you know about the nervous system?

3 Anatomy-Nervous System Objectives
Students will be able to: Define terms relative to the nervous system. Identify characteristics & functions of the nervous system.

4 Anatomy-Nervous System Terminology
Central The center Originating from the center Peripheral Away from the center Outer part of a body system

5 Anatomy-Nervous System Terminology
Sensory Relating to senses or sensation Impulse travels toward spinal cord & brain Motor Movement Impulse travels from brain & spinal cord

6 Anatomy-Nervous System Divisions
Central Nervous System (CNS) Consist of the brain & spinal cord Control center of the body Receives sensory information & responds to it Protected by bone

7 Anatomy-Nervous System Divisions
Sensory & Motor Response Place your pen/pencil on your desk. Look at where it is Close your eyes Find & pick up your pen/pencil

8 Anatomy-Nervous System Divisions
Describe what happened in order of occurrence Reached for pen/pencil Stimulus of touching pen/pencil triggered nerve impulse in sensory nerves in fingers Sensory impulse traveled through spinal cord to brain, giving you clues that object was a pencil Motor impulse sent back to fingers through spinal cord and you pick up pen/pencil

9 Anatomy-Nervous System Divisions
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) Nerves located outside the CNS Nerves connect CNS to other parts of body Consists of sensory & motor nerves Not protected by bone

10 Anatomy-Nervous System Divisions
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) Consists of nerves only 43 pairs of nerves 12 cranial nerves 31 spinal nerves

11 Anatomy-Nervous System Peripheral Nervous System
Autonomic Regulates involuntary action Controls smooth muscle, cardiac muscle & glands

12 Anatomy-Nervous System Peripheral Nervous System
Somatic Regulates voluntary action Controls skeletal muscle action
