1 Nervous system By: Ceili deBoer

2 Neurons Neurons are what make up most of the nervous system
Made up of dendrites an axon and myelin Myelin acts as insulation though its not continuous There is actually space between the myelin to let a signal travel down a neuron faster Synapses are where neurons connect to each other and that is where neurotransmitters are passed from one neuron to the next

3 CNS and PNS The nervous system is made up of two different parts, the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) The CNS is made up of the brain and the spinal cord The PNS is made up of mostly sensory neurons and nerves Both of these systems contain two different types of cells, afferent and efferent

4 Afferent and Efferent Afferent neurons move information towards the CNS and efferent move information away from the CNS In the PNS, afferent neurons, or sensory neurons, move information to the CNS Efferent neurons, or motor neurons, move information away from the CNS In the CNS, afferent neurons carry information to the brain Efferent neurons carry information to the PNS Within the motor neurons there is the somatic and autonomic systems

5 Somatic and Autonomic The somatic and autonomic nervous systems are found in the PNS The somatic system controls what we think about doing (moving, 5 senses) The autonomic system controls what we don’t think about doing (breathing, digestion) Within the autonomic system there is the sympathetic and parasympathetic division

6 Sympathetic and Parasympathetic
Sympathetic controls your stress levels It increases your heart rate and your blood pressure as well as helping create adrenaline and shutting down blood supply to your digestive and reproductive system so that there is more blood available for our muscles and lungs Parasympathetic is the complete opposite It dials down your heart rate and blood pressure

7 I Hope You Enjoyed!
