Words to Know Quarter 1 Unit 2

Theme is a central message or insight into life revealed through a literary work. It is often implied and readers must use information from the story components to gain understanding of it

Thesis The thesis statement is 1 or 2 sentences in an essay that contains the focus and tells the reader what the essay is going to be about. The thesis statement should be specific- it should cover only what will be discussed in the paper.

Analytical Paper breaks down an issue or an idea into its component parts, evaluates the issue or idea, and presents this breakdown and evaluation to the audience.

Interrelationships The way in which each of 2 or more things is related to the other or others. Think: character traits in a Venn diagram

Societal relates to how society functions. Generally there is only ONE society per setting. When reading, think of the characters' interactions with their community, or setting and the other characters in the book. This idea will help you notice universal themes!

Cultural The behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group (among others) that are demonstrated in society. There can be MANY cultures present within society.

Motif is a recurring element that has symbolic significance in a story. Through it's repetition , a motif can help produce other narrative (or literary) aspects such as theme or mood.
