What is a theory? Theories provide powerful evidence-based explanations for scientific occurrences, such as gravity, evolution, the creation of the universe, general relativity, quantum mechanics, and more. Theories are based on hypotheses that have been well-tested by many scientific investigations. Theories use all the available current evidence to explain the world around us.

What makes a theory different from a law? Laws are statements that describe observable facts that have been seen over and over again without variation. Theories do not “grow up” into laws – they are two separate things.
