HOW TO BE SAFE WHEN YOU ARE DEVELOPING FILM AND PRINTS DARKROOM SAFETY HOW TO BE SAFE WHEN YOU ARE DEVELOPING FILM AND PRINTS

Chemicals Minimize your exposure to the chemicals by wearing gloves when developing film, and by wearing gloves and/or using tongs when developing prints

CHEMICALS Fixer is considered a hazardous waste: this means it cannot go down the drain! We re-use it until it gets old, and then we dispose of it in the hazardous waste jug.

CHEMICALS If you get the chemicals on your hands, wash them with soap and hot water. If you get chemicals in your eye, flush them with water and tell the teacher Prevent getting chemicals in your eye by wearing goggles.

DARKROOM FASHION Before developing film or entering the darkroom, you should Put on an apron Put on some goggles

Ventilation There are exhaust vents in the darkroom ceiling to help keep the air breathable.

Common sense tips Wash your hands at the end of the period every time you work with film or prints Don’t have food or drink in the darkroom If you feel dizzy/faint or your skin reacts, leave the darkroom and tell the teacher; you may be sensitive to a chemical When operating the paper cutter, keep fingers behind the safety guard, focus on what you’re doing, and close the cutting blade/fasten the safety lock when done

Common sense tips Don’t place yourself or you subject in a place where you or he/she could get hurt Ask people’s permission before taking their pictures, and ask private property owners for permission before taking pictures

Common sense tips Drying prints: keep fingers out of the dryer and don’t touch the surfaces of the dryer to avoid injuries and/or burns When using the dry mount iron Don’t test the heat of the tacking iron by touching it When closing the platen of the dry mount press, be sure that the print and mount are the only items under the platen Be careful not to burn yourself!

Save these notes! We will have a test over them tomorrow. You must get a perfect score before you can start developing!
