Lab Safety- What you need to know.
Andrew Dunn

Symbols During our labs you may see certain symbols that are warnings. It is important that you know and remember these. You WILL see these on the test. You may want to take a note of them.

Disposal This symbol means that whatever material or chemical that is being used, MUST be disposed – or thrown away- properly. You CANNOT just throw this in the trash can!! I will give you directions on how to properly dispose of things when needed.

Bio Hazard This means that whatever we are working with is a Bio-Hazard. It is, or can be dangerous to humans. Again, I will tell you when and how to properly handle these items.

Sharp Objects This means we will be working with sharp objects and there is a chance that you could accidently cut yourself. SO BE CAREFUL AND PROTECT YOUR HANDS. This is why there should be no horse play during labs, I do not want anyone to get hurt. Even scissors can hurt.

Clothing Protection This means that you need to wear an apron at all times during the lab. Whatever we are working with could stain and/or ruin your clothes. No one likes to ruin their clothes so pay attention to this one.

Electrical Safety This is a warning for electrical safety. Another words, you could get shocked if you are not careful or not paying attention.

Irritant If you see, it means you need to be wearing gloves during the lab. Whatever we are working with may irritate your skin so wear gloves to protect your hands.

Chemical This means we are working with a chemical or a hazardous liquid that could potentially be dangerous to you or others around you. So do not spill anything, and if you do accidentally spill something, inform me IMMEDIATELY.

Fumes This means we are working with a chemicals that may cause dangerous fumes. Be cautious and do not inhale any fumes.

Poison This means something is poisonous.
This is why we do not ever eat or drink anything that we are working with or even near the lab.

Open Flame/Flammable This will appear when there is an open flame during the lab, or if something is extremely flammable. You may get burned so be careful. Ladies- hair spray is EXTREMELY flammable, as are most perfumes. Please avoid wearing these items on lab days. If there is an open flame I will ask that you wear your hair up.

Eye Safety This means that you need to be wearing goggles and/or safety glasses at all times during the lab. If you do not, you may end up having to use the eye wash station that is for emergencies. No one wants that.

Animal Safety This means we are working with a live animal and that both you and the animal need to be safe. ALWAYS USE CAUTION WHEN HANDLING ANIMALS.

Radioactive If you see this then it means that radioactive materials are being used. BE CAREFUL.
