Environmental Issues Global Issues

Global Environmental Issues Environmental concerns that can affect the quality of life of people everywhere Population growth Poverty and hunger Greenhouse effect (fossil fuels) Global warming Destruction of the ozone layer Destruction of the rain forest

Population Growth Each person requires energy, space and resources to survive. Scarce water 434 million experience water stress or scarcity, 2025 projected 3.1 billion. Scarce Cropland 500 million live in area were cropland is scarce, 2025 projected 950 million. Scarce Forest land 1.1 million live in area with scarce forest land, 2025 projected 3 million.

More People…..More……… Resources Waste Land, Food, Water, Energy, emissions Waste Solid, Bio-waste, water

Poverty and Hunger Poverty: a condition in which a person does not have sufficient resources to eat and live. Due to lack of resources Affects 2/3 of developing nations.

Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming Greenhouse effect: water vapor and gases in the atmosphere absorb and reflect rays and warm earths surface. Carbon dioxide (fossil fuels) Ozone Methane Chlorofluorocarbons Global Warming: increase in the earths average temperature.

Destruction of the Ozone Layer A protective layer in the upper atmosphere that traps ultraviolet (UV) radiation and prevents it from reaching earths surface. Chemicals that destroy Ozone Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s): Aerosol Air conditioners Halons Fire extinguishers

Destruction of Rain Forest Hot, wet forested area that contains many species of trees, animals, and plants. Covers 7% of earths land. The trees remove co2 and produce oxygen. Half of the worlds plant in animal species live in rain forest. Destruction rates: 240 square miles every day, equals 6417 acres per hour, 107 acres per minute or 1.78 acres per second.
