1 Greenhouse

2 Transfer of Energy Radiation- The transfer of energy across space and the atmosphere. Conduction- The flow of heat from a warmer object to the colder object. Convection- The transfer of heat by air currents.

3 Heating the Atmosphere
Solar energy reaches the earth as radiation. Only about half of this radiation reaches the earth’s surface, the rest is absorbed or reflected by the atmosphere.

4 The movement of Energy Air that is constantly moving upwards, downwards, and sideways causes Earth’s weather. In the troposphere the Less dense warmer air rises into the atmosphere More dense cooler air sinks to the bottom This process is called a Convection Current

6 Greenhouse Effect The gases in the Earth’s atmosphere act like glass.
Sunlight gets through the atmosphere, then heats the surface of the Earth. The Earth’s surface radiates some of the heat, and lets the heat back out into the atmosphere this heat either Escapes into space Absorbed by greenhouse gasses which warms the air, then the heat is radiated back towards Earth.

8 So What’s the problem The greenhouse gasses are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide As these levels rise, the gasses are able to trap more and more heat. This raises the global temperature Other things that have contributed to this problem is the destruction of carbon dioxide “sinks”. Plants especially the rain forest Oceans
