1 AIM: How does pollution affect the environment?

2 I. Water Pollution disposal of substances into water lakes, rivers, oceans
Where does the pollution come from? Sewage wastes from homes & factories animal wastes from farms fertilizers

3 Toxic Wastes Toxic (poisonous) wastes can cause environmental problems because when they are disposed of they can collect in the cells of organisms. Mercury is a toxin that can be found in fish

4 Biological Magnification
The concentration of toxic substances (DDT) as you move through the food chain (plants are eaten by herbivores, which are eaten by carnivores, etc…..) increases.

5 Thermal (Heat) Some power plants & industries use water to cool their machines. The warmed water is then released into a river or lake. Why is this a problem? The warm water cannot hold as much oxygen as cold water and some species may suffocate.

6 Solid Waste A new increased demand for disposable products has led to solid waste problems.

7 How can we dispose of solid waste?
Recycle Landfill Incinerate (burn)

8 II. Air Pollution The burning of fossil fuels that were formed from the remains of organisms millions of years ago contribute to air pollution.

9 Acid Rain Due to burning of fossil fuels SO2, NO2
Destruction of trees and destruction of pond ecosystems *Makes them acidic

10 Global Warming What is Carbon Dioxide (CO2)?
A greenhouse gas that is produced from burning fossil fuels It is also a product of cellular respiration (we breathe it out)

11 Greenhouse gases Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere
What are some other greenhouse gases? CO2, methane, water vapor

12 Carbon Dioxide in the Atmosphere:
The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been increasing.

13 Burning of fossil fuels Deforestation Cow flatulence (methane)
How do we contribute to the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? Burning of fossil fuels Deforestation Cow flatulence (methane)

14 Less trees = less photosynthesis = more CO2 and less O2
How does Deforestation cause an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide? Glucose H2O + O2 CO2 Increased CO2 in the atmosphere Less trees = less photosynthesis = more CO2 and less O2

15 What does increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere cause?

16 *This increase in earth’s temperature is called:
*Heat that would normally radiate back into space gets trapped. *This increase in earth’s temperature is called: Global Warming

17 What are some of the detrimental effects of Global Warming?
Melting of the polar ice caps, leading to a rise in sea level and flooding in many coastal areas.

18

19 Ozone Layer: Protects us from UV radiation (UV RAYS)

20 What are chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s)?
Chemicals that destroy the ozone layer Aerosol cans Refrigerator Emissions Air Conditioner Emissions

21 What is the problem with using CFC’s?
They create holes in the ozone layer around earth. This will allow increased UV radiation to reach the Earth

22 How can UV radiation affect living things?
Mutations Cancer

23 Global Warming vs. Ozone Layer Depletion
Caused by: Increased CO2 Caused by: releasing CFCs Both Caused by air pollution Due to:Using aerosol cans, AC units, fridge Due to: burning Fossil fuels and Deforestation Results: Melting of Ice caps Results:More UV Reach earth , so More skin cancer
