Beer Hall Putsch and Jail Hitler tries to overthrow the government and fails in the Beer Hall Putsch Hitler is sent to prison for being a traitor Hitler writes his famous book Mein Kampf (My Struggle) while in prison

Hitler Became Chancellor January 1933 The economic depression of the 1930s made many more people vote for the Nazis. In 1933, politicians pressured Hindenburg (the President of Germany) that Hitler should become Chancellor. Chancellors in Germany have more power than the President

Reichstag Fire February 1933 The Reichstag building burnt down. A communist was found inside the building. He admitted responsibility. Chancellor Hitler was able to convince people that the Communists were trying to take power by terrorism. He was able to have the Communists banned from the Reichstag.

The Enabling Act March 1933 Hitler uses the fear of Communism to pass the Enabling Act allowing him to rule for 4 years without needing permission to pass laws from the Reichstag Hitler then uses his power to ban all other political parties!!

Political Prisoners Political prisoners were put in work camps run by Hitler’s enforcement squad – the S.S. (Schutzstaffel )

The Night of the Long Knives June 1934 Hitler had to get rid of opposition in his own party The SS killed over 1000 members of the other group (known as the Storm Battalion) including their leader, Ernst Rohm – a friend of Hitler’s! Hitler gained a lot of support from the military, since the military disliked Rohm

President Hindenburg Dies August 1934 President Hindenburg’s death gave Hitler the opportunity to combine the role of chancellor and president. He called himself “Der Fuhrer”
