1 The Rise of Hitler

2 Early Life Born in Austria in 1889 Father died when he was 13
Went to Vienna at 18 in the hopes of entering Art school. That same year his mother dies of Cancer Drew pictures of landmarks to sell in shops.

3 World War I Volunteered to fight in the German Army.
Wounded by a shell fragment at the Battle of the Somme and sent home First time away from war. Anti War protests “led by the Jews” Returned and at end of the war was Temporarily blinded by gas. Severely depressed by the loss of the war

4 The Weimer Republic Germany was set up as a democracy.
Chancellor and Reichstag Faced the challenges of many smaller parties. German Workers’ Party Hitler joined German Workers’ Party. Swayed by the political ideals of its leader.

5 German Workers’ Party Rises through various positions in the party.
Makes first public speech. By July 1929 Hitler becomes leader of the party Renames it the National Socialist Party (The Nazi Party)

6 Beer Hall Putsch 1923 attempts to overthrow the Wiemer Republic.
Tried to force govt. officials to swear allegiance to him. Convicted of treason and sentenced to 5 years in prison. While in prison writes Mein Kampf “My Struggle” Later becomes the ideologies of the Nazi party.

7 Mein Kampf Idea of the “Master Race” - Aryan
People are divided up based on appearances and given a rank. Untermenschen is the opposite of the Aryan. Jews and Slavic peoples were at the bottom.

8 Rise to Power Germany desired a strong leader.
Uses Democracy to run for President Uses propaganda and the poor state of Germany as his platform. Made Chancellor of Germany in January 1933. Eliminates German Democratic system. Names himself Dictator - Fuhrer

9 The Third Reich The Nazi party controlled all aspects of German life.
The SS troops and the Gestapo enforced the rules of Hitler The people did not fear these invasions, instead the praised Hitler's ability to rid Germany of economic hardship. Businesses were brought under government control.

10 The Third Reich Propaganda was used to spread the message of the Third Reich School books were rewritten to reflect the teachings of the Nazi Party. Important works were burned in protest. Hitler sought to eliminate all religion and replace it with government doctrine.
