Density Day 2 September 21

Objective Students will be able to calculate the density of a given substance.

Density Remember from yesterday: Density is the relationship between mass and volume The formula is: density = mass volume Units for density will have two parts, either grams per milliliter (g/mL) or grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3)

Yesterday’s Practice Problems Go over yesterday’s work

Other Density Problems You can use the formula d = m/v and find any missing value. For example, if you are given the density and volume, you can calculate mass: Mass = density x volume The density of a substance is 4.0 g/cm3. If a sample of the substance has a volume of 25 cm3, then what is its mass?

The density of a substance is 4. 0 g/cm3 The density of a substance is 4.0 g/cm3. If a sample of the substance has a volume of 25 cm3, then what is its mass?

Other Density Problems If you are given the density and mass, you can calculate volume: Volume = mass / density You have a lead ball with a mass of 420 g. The density of lead is 10.5 g/cm3. What is the volume of the ball?

You have a lead ball with a mass of 420 g. The density of lead is 10 You have a lead ball with a mass of 420 g. The density of lead is 10.5 g/cm3. What is the volume of the ball?

Multi-Step Problems A graduated cylinder is filled with water to a level of 40.0 mL. When a piece of copper is lowered into the cylinder, the water level rises to 63.4 mL. Find the volume of the copper sample. If the density of the copper is 8.9 g/cm3, what is its mass?

More Independent Practice Solve the density problems on your worksheet. Show all of your work! List the information that you get from the question, and make sure you know what the question is asking! Any problems you don’t finish are homework! Make sure you are using the formula correctly!

Complete Density Practice Problems Worksheet. Homework Complete Density Practice Problems Worksheet. It will be collected tomorrow.

Exit Ticket – Write on a paper large enough to read from the front Solve the problem. A substance has a mass of 36 grams, and you found the volume to be 12 ml using displacement. What is the density of this substance? Include units!
