Prefixes “Ante-” (Latin) meaning before, or infront of, as in “antebellum,” which means occurring or existing before a war. “Dia-” (Greek) meaning apart or opposite, as in “diagonal,” which means a straight line joining two opposite corners. “Epi-” (Greek) meaning upon or after, as in “epicenter,” which means the central point of something. “Peri-” (Greek) meaning around, as in “perimeter,” which means the boundary around something. “Pro-” (Latin) meaning before, forward, or in favor of, as in “progress,” which means forward movement toward a destination.

Suffixes “-acy” or “acity” meaning having the quality of, as in “audacity,” which means the having the quality of taking bold risks. “-chrome” meaning pigment or color, as in “monochrome,” which means a painting or drawing in one color. “-itis” meaning inflammation, as in “bronchitis,” which is an inflammation in the bronchial tubes. “-fold” meaning mulitplied by, as in “tenfold,” which means ten times as great. “-ous” or “-ose” meaning posessing or full of, as in “porous,” which means full of pores.

Reading Vocabulary Phonemic awareness -  listeners are able to hear, identify and manipulate phonemes, the smallest units of sound that can differentiate meaning. Automaticity -  the ability to do things without occupying the mind with the low-level details required, allowing it to become an automatic response pattern or habit. Text structure - how the information within a written text is organized.
