Lesson 6-6 Customary Units of Weight Overview; Students explore U.S. Customary units of weight and convert tons to pounds and pounds to ounces Vocabulary: weight, ton (T), pound (lb), ounce (oz)

Math Message Would a stapler weigh about 7 ounces or 7 pounds? Might a car weigh about 1 ton or 2,000 pounds? Be prepared to explain your answers.

Math Message – Follow-Up In Unit 4, you learned about measuring mass in grams and kilograms. In the United States, we use the U.S. customary system, which measures weight in units including tons, pounds, and ounces.

Math Message – Follow-Up A giraffe or a car weighs about one ton (2,000) pounds. Four sticks of butter or an adult shoe weighs about one pound (16 ounces). A slice of bread, a letter, or a CD each weighs about one ounce.

Examine the measurement scale at the top of your math journal page 204 What is the relationship between tons and pounds and pounds and ounces. How did you determine whether a stapler would weigh about 7 pounds or 7 ounces.

Converting Tons, Pounds, and Ounces If a small truck weighs about 2 tons, how could we use the measurement scale to determine the weight in pounds? If the weight of a box of sugar is 2 pounds, how can we use the measurement scale to determine the number of ounces?

Let’s fill in the tables on math journal page 204 How can you convert from tons to pounds without using the scale? From pounds to ounces? What happens when we convert a larger measure of weight, such as tons, to a smaller measure such as pounds? Why? What happens when we convert a smaller measure of weight, such as ounces, to a larger measure, such as pounds? Why?

How can we use this measurement scale to find the number of ounces? Solving U.S. Customary Weight Number Stories Math Journal pp 204-205; Student Reference Book page 26 We picked 4 bags of apples. Each bag weighed 2 pounds. How much do the 4 bags weigh? How can we use this measurement scale to find the number of ounces?

How can we use this measurement scale to find the number of pounds? Solving U.S. Customary Weight Number Stories Math Journal pp 204-205; Student Reference Book page 26 The elephant at our favorite zoo weighs 7 tons. A nearby hippopotamus weighs 4 tons. How many more pounds does the elephant weigh than the hippopotamus? How can we use this measurement scale to find the number of pounds?

In partners, complete problems 5 – 9 on math journal page 205. (11 min)

Summarize Share your solutions and strategies for solving the number stories on journal page 205.
