How?

The Nile River Valley

Importance of Rivers Many ancient civilizations developed near major rivers. These include: Babylonia Assyria Phoenicia The Shang Dynasty Like those before it, the civilization of ancient Egypt developed along the banks of the Nile River.

Geography of the Nile River Located in Northeastern Africa Begins in Ethiopia Flows south to north Empties into the Mediterranean Sea

Using the Nile River Sahara Desert gets little rain, except for a few times a year. The heavy rains make the Nile River overflow, and it floods the surrounding area. This leaves behind moist, fertile soil that ancient Egyptians used to grow crops. The crops were used for different reasons, like food and making paper. Irrigation channels were dug to direct the water from the Nile to the farmlands.
