2 Content area-Social Studies Grade level-3 rd Grade Summary-The purpose of this instructional Powerpoint is to teach students about the Nile River and its impact on the ancient civilization of Egypt. Learning objective-Given the information contained in the Powerpoint and websites, the student will answer the questions within the activity with 100% accuracy. Content Standard-3.50 Explain how people depend on the physical environment and its natural resources to satisfy their basic needs. Accomplishment-Identify how the Nile River benefited the people of Ancient Egypt.

3 What is the Nile River? This information and more can be found at this site: http://egypt.mrdonn.org/ The Nile River is the world’s longest river: over 4,000 miles from end to end. It runs through several African countries and empties into the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Egypt.

4 How important was the Nile? The Nile River is the primary water source for the country of Egypt. Without it, Egypt would be entirely desert land and few humans could live there. In ancient times, the Egyptians depended on the Nile’s yearly flooding to replenish the fertile soil, which the Egyptians used to grow crops.

5 How important was the Nile? Papyrus reeds grow along the banks of the Nile. Ancient Egyptians used these reeds to make several items, like paper, rope, baskets, furniture, even food and clothing! Fish, wild animals, and edible plants could be gathered from the Nile and its banks, which meant a great deal of food for the ancient Egyptians.

6 Ancient Egyptian Art and the Nile. The ancient Egyptians depended heavily on the Nile river for food, water, and other necessities. Because of this, the Nile plays a big role in ancient Egyptian culture and is depicted in their pottery, tapestries, and hieroglyphics. Archeologists have been able to see how impactful the Nile has been to Egyptian culture from these images.
