5 The Nile River is Life & Death
The Nile River passes through Egypt and provides rich soil deposits of silt that fertilize land. As a result, the ancient people of Egypt were able to raise crops and feed themselves; The Nile floods every May; It was either high water or hunger.

6 Continued The Nile is the world’s longest river (4,000 miles long);
It flows through the modern countries of Uganda, Ethiopia and the Sudan; Much of East Africa experiences a rainy season from May until September. The Nile River flows into a delta, which is a fertile fan-shaped area that branches into the Mediterranean.

7 Egyptian Geography Northern Egypt is called Lower Egypt because it lies “lower,” or downstream, on the river. Upper Egypt in the south is “upstream.” The Nile cuts through different landscapes; some areas are desert and others are more fertile, like the Delta region.
