Welcome to Mr. Gross’s Wonderful World of TRIVIA!!!! Wednesday, November 7, 2012 Welcome to Mr. Gross’s Wonderful World of TRIVIA!!!!

How it works…. Each table group comes up with a team name When Mr. Gross puts a question on the board, each team must write their answer on the whiteboard at their table The “WRITER” will change for each question You will have exactly 1 minute to answer each question – everyone holds up boards at same time Once you hold your board up, you cannot put it down for any reason (or you will not get a point)

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER….. TALK WHEN YOU ARE HOLDING UP YOUR BOARDS – YOUR TEAM WILL NOT GET A POINT IF YOU ARE TALKING

IF….. Your team wins, I will bring in treats for your team on tomorrow while you are taking the test There is a tie, or if the whole class ties, I will bring in treats for the whole class on tomorrow during the test…….what a great way to take a Thursday test!

Here comes a practice question…….

Practice Question Tell me one non-living part of an ecosystem and how it impacts the different kinds of organisms that live in an ecosystem Example: Precipitation is non-living and different organisms need different amounts of water in an ecosystem

Practice Question Answer ANSWERS VARY: Light, temperature, soil, rocks. Different organisms need different amounts of these and/or use them in different ways

Question #1 What are “wetlands”?

Areas of land that are flooded or wet all or part of the year. Question #1 ANSWER Areas of land that are flooded or wet all or part of the year.

Question #2 What is an omnivore?

Question #2 ANSWER An animal that eats both plants and animals (fruits and vegetables and meat)

What is the role of a “Producer” in an ecosystem Question #3 What is the role of a “Producer” in an ecosystem

Question #3 ANSWER A producer makes its own food, generally through photosynthesis, and starts the flow of energy through a food chain or web.

Question #4 Multiple choice: Different kinds of plants living in the same area must compete for water. Which kind of plant has the greatest chance of survival? a) the plant with the largest leaves b) the plant with a compact root system c) the plant with the largest root system d) a plant with needles instead of leaves

c) the plant with the largest root system Question #4 ANSWER c) the plant with the largest root system

Question #5 Creatures that live in the deep ocean need to adapt to which environmental factor? a) lack of food b) high pressure c) low levels of salt d) high temperatures

Question #5 ANSWER b) high pressure

Question #6 Why would a desert plant have a large root system close to the surface?

Question #6 ANSWER To quickly absorb water when it rains before it runs off of the hard ground.

Question #7 Algae help corals make a hard outside coating and corals give this type of algae a safe place to live. This is an example of what type of symbiotic relationship?

Question #7 ANSWER Mutualism

Question #8 When decomposers break down the remains of dead organisms, what do they make that can be used by plants? a) starch b) cellulose c) nitrogen compounds d) hydrogen compounds

Question #8 ANSWER c) nitrogen compounds

Question #9 In an ecosystem, ____ break down waste and dead matter. a) producers b) consumers c) scavengers and decomposers

c) scavengers and decomposers Question #9 ANSWER c) scavengers and decomposers

Question #10 A big horn sheep eats a prickly pear cactus, a cougar eats the big horn sheep. This is an example of a…. a) food chain b) food web

Question #10 ANSWER a) food chain

Question #11 Where is the GREATEST amount of energy located on an energy pyramid? a) top b) middle c) bottom HINT: The most energy is where the most organisms are located

Question #11 ANSWER c) bottom

Question #12 Which adaptation BEST helps elk survive in the Taiga biome? a) thick fur b) large antlers c) change of color d) winter hibernation

Question #12 ANSWER a) thick fur

Question #13 Which land biome is home to more species than any other biome? a) taiga b) grassland c) deciduous forest d) tropical rainforest

d) tropical rainforest Question #13 ANSWER d) tropical rainforest

Question #14 Trees that grow well in wet, cool climates would probably grow well in the….. a) tundra b) desert c) tropical rainforest d) temperate rainforest

d) temperate rainforest Question #14 ANSWER d) temperate rainforest

Question #15 In an ecosystem, birds depend on insects to survive. If someone spreads pesticides to control the insect population, which of the following will most likely occur? a) the bird population will increase b) the bird population will decrease c) the bird population will decrease, then increase d) the bird population will increase, then decrease

b) the bird population will decrease Question #15 ANSWER b) the bird population will decrease
