Presentation transcript:

BR: 3/28/17 What new innovations to Utah does your 1890s Letter: Changing Times cover well? What parts might need some help? Reminder: The task is to write a letter to a friend, explaining the many new changes a Utahn such as yourself in the 1890s would be experiencing. The assignment specifically asks that that you answer: “What changes have you seen in your community, or the nearby larger communities?” Examples: Power Plants, Electricity, Streetcars, Amusement Parks (like Saltair, or Lagoon), the Telephone, new Colleges, etc. “How will / do these changes affect you?” “How do you feel about these new things? Are you excited, or scared, or maybe both?” Explain! You’ll have ~30 minutes to finish prepping your letter for feedback. The following 15 minutes (in groups of 2) will be a chance for you to do the Charrette Protocol. The remainder of class will be spent using that feedback to make your letter even better! What’s that? Glad you asked!

Charrette Protocol* (7 min ea.) Presentation (2 min, 30 sec): Presenters present their letter to another group. The other group listens (don’t interrupt; you’ll get a chance to respond. Take notes as they talk). If you run out of things to say, sit silently. You might be inspired to add something! Framing Question (30 sec.): Presenter asks a specific question or two to help structure the feedback from the listeners. Example: “What could I explain better…?” or “What things might you be confused about…?” Feedback (2 minutes): Listeners give suggestions. Presenters listen, take notes (listen quietly! No Interrupting!) Note: keep feedback helpful, specific, and kind Open Discussion (2 minutes): Presenters and listeners have a dialogue about the suggestions / feedback. (Next, swap & repeat!) *Note: Each section will be timed, and we ALL change together! 

HW: Due Thursday You’ll have the rest of class to finish fine-tuning your letter. On Thursday, we’ll have another Charrette Protocol, so you can tweak your final draft a bit better. We’ll also finish Ch. 10 then. Otherwise, besides the letter, the only HW you have is to study Ch. 10, and prepare for the test after the break!
