CONFLICT NOTES

Definition: * the struggle that grows out of the interplay of two opposing forces. Conflict provides interest, suspense, and tension. (It is the energy that moves the story).

Four main types: struggle against nature (man vs. nature) struggle against another person (man vs. man) struggle against society (man vs. society) struggle for mastery between two elements within a character. (man vs. self)

Man vs. Destiny (Fate) is an additional conflict Man vs. Destiny (Fate) is an additional conflict. It is only cited if the “gods” themselves actually appear (like in mythology). Otherwise one of the other four types is cited instead.

How many conflicts can a story contain? Short stories may contain only one conflict, but novels rarely contain only one. Usually there are several minor conflicts in addition to one or more major conflicts within a novel or longer piece of prose (story).
