Strategies for Determining Implicit Main Ideas

What is hard? Where do I need to concentrate?

Teaching point Today I want to teach you that once readers know how a nonfiction text is complex when it comes to main ideas, they can develop and draw on a toolkit of strategies to support them in determining the main idea.

Think: What is the main idea Think: What is the main idea? You may want to chunk ideas together to get the full picture. Then think, What else??? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJd-DMPmFzQ

Here is how one student took notes then put them in order.

You need to be prepared for disaster to strike at any time. Geography – Weather Hurricanes, heat waves, fire, tornados * Old infrastructure, water, roads, buildings Cities are dangerous places to live 8 million people Close buildings

Today As you head off to read today, draw on strategies that will help you determine the main ideas your text is teaching. Keep in mind that often the main ideas won’t be stated clearly. They’ll be implicit, and often there will be multiple main ideas across a text. Keep in mind big goals Pause only when you reach the end of a meaningful chunk , then take notes.

To teach well:
